Assalamualaikum my name is Noor Amira Asnieta Binti Asmawi, so here I would like to tell you guys a little bit about culture in Terengganu. Terengganu has a rich and varied culture with many influences contributing to its current identity. The base, of course, is the Islamic Malay culture. However, it also takes influences from Chinese, Indian as well as well as its colonial past. Kuala Terengganu has an Islamic heritage center and also has one of the liveliest Chinatown known as Kampung China. Instead of the Baba and Nyonya in Penang and Malacca, Terengganu has Mek and Awang. And just like their west coast counterparts, the history of Terengganu's Peranakan dates back around 300 years when Chinese immigrants are settled and blended with local Malay The rich culture of Terengganu is particularly evident in the graceful dance movements and hypnotizing music of state such as Ulek Mayang, dikir puteri , rodat, and tarian bali .
Ulek Mayang
Ulek Mayang is a classical Malay dance of Terengganu. It is the ritualistic dance performed to appeased or invoke the spirits of the sea and is always accompanied by a unique song also called Ulek Mayang. An orchestra comprising drums, gong, violin, and accordion. It performed at night, 10 -15 dancers form a circle while a head dancer or Adi sing poetic lyrics to invoke the blessing of a mythical being.
Dikir Puteri
Performed by women seated in rows accompanied by the beatings of kompang and gong, Dikir Puteri makes an entertaining and enjoyable show. It starts with a slow rhythmic chant, which rapidly accelerates to reach a crescendo.
Rodat
With the use of small drum producing an infectious beat, the Rodat musician perform love songs alongside colourfully attired male and female singing dancers.
Tarian Saba
This dance was once a dance of worship, but today it is performed solely for the purpose of art and as an entertainment show only.
This dance is a combination of singing, dancing, and music.
Traditional musical instruments such as threshold (bamboo), tambourines and flutes are used to form an occult while the songs are also in the form of contemporary tunes and rhythms.
